A new twin for Killarney has been born

KILLARNEY has a new twin sister.

The town has just confirmed a collaboration with the City of Scottsdale in the US State of Arizona and the twinning has been in the development stages for the past seven years – prior to the demise of the former town council.

The Killarney Town Twinning and Sister City Association, chaired by former Mayor of Killarney, Seán Counihan, comprises former councillors and business interests who have been very active in promoting Killarney through links with twin towns and sister cities in Europe and the US.

Chairman Counihan has acknowledged the support received from the Killarney Municipal District Council, particularly Mayor Brendan Cronin, in bringing this collaboration to a successful and official conclusion.

A formal agreement between Killarney was Scottsdale has been signed by Mayor Cronin and the Mayor of the City of Scottsdale, Jim Lane.

“This agreement will now go forward for registration to the international sister cities body organisation,” Mr Counihan said.

“Scottsdale has close associations with destinations in New Zealand, Australia Switzerland and Malta and Killarney hopes to gain access to more contacts which would be beneficial for culture, education and tourist exchanges,” he added.

The arrangement will also focus on the promotion of youth activities, sports, environmental matters, economic development and municipal governance.

Scottsdale is home to the prestigious Phoenix PGA Open – won this week by four-time major champion Brooks Koepka – and the Killarney committee chairman hopes that the twinning arrangement might held create an opportunity for the mutual promotion of golf between the two locations.

“Once this pandemic is over, we hope to sit down with elected representatives and management to review the active and non-active members of our twin towns and cities links,” Mr Counihan said.

Scottsdale is a city in the eastern part of Maricopa County in Arizona with a population of close on 260,000.
