JAMIE Vermiglio’s great FA Cup dream has come to an end – but at least it saved the former Killarney soccer player’s dressing room blushes.
Following their giant killing act in the third round of the competition, when they overcame Wayne Rooney’s understrength Derby County, non-league Chorley FC were pitted against Premiership side Wolverhampton Wanders at Victory Park last night.
Bur despite losing 1-0, former St Brendan’s College and St Oliver’s National School pupil Vermoglio – who played with both Killarney Celtic and Killarney Athletic during his time living in Kerry – was probably breathing a small sigh of relief when he woke up this morning.
If Chorley had managed to beat Wolves, Jamie had promised his players that he would sing an entire Adele song in the voice of Donald Duck so at least he was saved that task.
Unfashionable Chorley, to their credit, were a real match for Nuno Espírito Santo’s Wolves and, at the final whistle, a Ferraira Vitanha goal after 12 minutes was all that separated them.
In fact National League North side Chroley dominated the game for large periods and they certainly left the field with their heads held high and with Jamie Vermiglio’s reputation as a quality manager considerably enhanced.
“I feel really proud but, ultimately I’m disappointed,” said Jamie whose day job is as a head schoolteacher.
