COUNCIL officials in Killarney will engage with tourism industry representatives and all relevant stakeholders to make provision for an orderly return of tour buses to the town when Covid-19 travel restrictions are lifted.
Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin, had asked Kerry County Council to make provision for the return of tour buses to avoid potential traffic chaos and congestion in town centre hotspots.
“There needs to be a sensible and realistic discussion with the accommodation sector, tour operators and all involved,” he said.

Cllr Cronin said although the pandemic is currently preventing travel, it is essential to formulate a plan to avoid problems arising.
“With nobody on our streets right now you might ask if this is madness but we must plan ahead,” he remarked.
Cllr Niall Kelleher said it was important that the process involved all stakeholders and that all involved should be consulted to ascertain their views.
Cllr Niall O’Callaghan, meanwhile, said Killarney was built around the tour bus trade.
“The last message we want to send out is that we are not tour bus friendly. We need to be seen as a bus-friendly town and we must do what is necessary to created that,” he said.
Council officials said as part of the ongoing review of the mobility plan for the town, engagement will take place with the relevant stakeholders involved in tour operations.
