So this is what they had way back in 2019

A COLLECTION of everyday objects, which can say a great deal about the time we live in, has been gathered to ensure a written record of life in Kerry in 2019 is provided for the benefit of future generations.

The project, initiated by the Arts Office of Kerry County Council and supported by Creative Ireland, sought to work with local communities during the recording process.

Participants selected an area in their home, from the items on a kitchen table to a fruit bowl, and made a list of its contents. The handwritten pages, collected and bound in a leather-covered book, will mark a snapshot in time, creating a record of contemporary popular culture for future generations.

The community-wide event ran throughout the summer in Lixnaw and the pages were being produced in collaboration with a number of different community groups.

Community activist Liz O’Keeffe, who is chairperson of Lixnaw Comhaltas, Scór Officer for Lixnaw GAA and member of Lixnaw Active Retirement, commented: “When I first heard of the Illustrated Inventory project it took a while for the idea to sink in but I find it really interesting that in 50 or 100 years from now people will be able to read about the objects we have and use today.”

She added: “I like it especially because everything is recorded in people’s own handwriting, and I sometimes wonder in 100 years’ time will people even use handwriting?”

As part of Heritage Week, those behind the project will host a drawing and animation workshop in Ceolann Cultural Centre, Lixnaw on Saturday, August 24, from 2pm to 4pm.

The images above show some of the everyday items collected as well as children attending the Kilflynn Enchanted Fairy Festival filling out inventory forms with details what toys they had brought, bought or won that day as well as the Active Retirement Group’s bring and buy sale which was also linked to the project.
