THE Mayor of Killarney has called on people in and around the town to embrace National Volunteering Week by looking at opportunities around them to help others or to improve the community in which they live.
Cllr John Sheahan said volunteerism is the backbone of communities and the activities carried out by volunteers in all sectors, such as the environment, sport and health, allow for the creation of networks and connections that help to build strong and resilient towns and villages.
Mayor Sheahan is himself an active volunteer with the Killarney Tidy Towns organisation and he can regularly be seen on litter picking patrol on the main Killarney-Tralee road.
“Last Monday night I took a break from the canvassing to help the Tidy Towns who were doing a blitz on the Tralee Road,” he said.
Mayor Sheahan said volunteering, while contributing hugely to communities, also provides significant social and health benefits to those who get involved.
“There are many different opportunities for volunteering out there and the most difficult part at times is taking the first step,” he said.
