Cathal Kelly is crowned Under 16 champion

THERE was great action on the Deerpark Pitch and Putt Club course in Killarney for the keenly contested Club Matchplay event that saw a semi-final line-up comprising of Alan Kelly against Darragh O’Callaghan and Lorcan Martin taking on Kieran Fitzpatrick.

Alan was a 2 and 1 winner over Darragh in the first semi-final before Lorcan beat Kieran 1 up in the other.

The decider between Alan and Lorcan saw the latter lead 1 up after the first 18 holes as he went on to record a 4 and 3 victory to become one of the few to achieve a Club Matchplay and Strokeplay double.

In the under 16 Matchplay 16 members did battle for the championship and plate events. In the championship Dara O’Shea defeated Erin Moloney in the first semi-final before Cathal Kelly was victorious over David O’Sullivan in the second of the penultimate rounds.

Cathal went on to defeat Dara 4 and 2 in the decider to succeed his brother Adam who won the event 12 months ago.

The plate event saw Brian McCarthy defeat TJ O’Sullivan in the first semi-final before Robbie Harnett defeated Tom Cronin in the other.

Brian was an 8 and 6 winner in the final to become the third winner of this event.
