A MAN who got lost on Carrauntoohill mountain yesterday was tracked down and brought to safety by Kerry Mountain Rescue Team volunteers following a near five-hour operation.
The rescue team was tasked to search for a missing hillwalker in the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks at 12.55pm.
A man in his 40s, from Cork, had become disorientated and subsequently got lost on his descent from Carrauntoohill.
Following an extensive search, the man was eventually located by Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 115 near the Black Mare Gully to the south west of Carrauntoohill.
Members of the rescue team descended to the man’s position and assisted him up to the summit of the mountain and back to the Hags Glen via the Devil’s Ladder route.
Conditions on the hills were reasonable throughout the day but visibility was poor in low cloud cover. Over 20 members of the team were involved in the operation, which concluded at 5.45pm.
