KILLARNEY Legion’s senior team manager, Kieran Cronin, has stepped down from the position.

This follows a very disappointing season which saw his side surrender their top flight status, crash out of the Kerry SFC championship and bow out of the East Kerry O’Donoghue Cup to local rivals Spa at the weekend.

The season – which saw Legion muster just one win from 11 outings in the county league – was in sharp contrast to last year when they went all the way to the county final, playing a hugely attractive brand of football, under the leadership of now Kerry minor boss Peter Keane.

The club announced on Facebook: “Kieran Cronin has stepped down from his position as senior team manager. We would like to sincerely thank Kieran, his selectors Michael Lyne and Diarmuid Leen, fitness and conditioning man Noel Kelleher and team attendant Paudie Lynch for their efforts, work and total dedication this year.”

legionPrior to succeeding Keane at Dirreen, Cronin had previously spend three years as manager of his local St Michael’s Foilmore club during which time they cemented their place in the top flight of the county league and won back-to-back South Kerry Championships.
After moving to work in Cork, he took up the role of coach with the Macroom senior team and spent two years in that position.
The Ballinskelligs man also assisted Jack O’Connor in preparing the Kerry Under 21 squad players based in Cork.
In his own playing days Cronin suffered a career-ending neck injury in 2004, while playing with the Kerry Under 21 side, which necessitated an extended spell in hospital. Following his recovery, he maintained his passion for the GAA by getting involved in coaching.
