Friday Flashback: The Killarney Bar that packed them in

old killarney streetTHIS is how downtown Killarney looked close on 100 years ago.

Men in hard hats and neat suits gathered at street corners to discuss the state of the nation and many of the womenfolk, clad in shawls, guided pony and traps along the uneven, unsurfaced streets on their way to the market.

This nostalgic snapshot was captured from near the courthouse on Fair Hill, focusing in on Upper College Street and Michael Collins Place.

Even though money was tight and opportunities were few, the Killarney Bar, to the left of the picture, was a popular port of call in the late 1920s. That building is now occupied by Casey’s music and off licence store.

To the right of that landmark corner building is where Crowley’s Supermarket – famous for its rotisserie chicken – thrived for many years and the site is now occupied by the Fairview Guesthouse.

To the far right is the bottom of Lewis Road which leads to Fitzgerald Stadium.
