TWO senior local authority officials from Killarney are spearheading plans to celebrate the 1916 centenary programme in the county.
Kerry County Council chief executive, Moira Murrell, and county arts officer, Kate Kennelly, have met with the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys and Envronment and Local Government Minister, Alan Kelly, for an update on the progress made.
The two senior officials, who are natives of Killarney, were accompanied at the meeting by Mayor of Kerry Cllr Pat McCarthy.
The gathering marked the conclusion of a major programme of citizen engagement which saw 81 workshops held nationwide to stimulate discussions and ideas on how local communities should commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising.
Minister Humphreys remarked: “I am so encouraged by the level of excitement and engagement in Kerry. Local people are really interested in getting involved and communities have been full of great ideas about how the centenary of the Easter Rising can be commemorated at a local level.”
The meeting heard that the development of the Kerry plan is well advanced and it will play an important role in ensuring Ireland 2016 is appropriately marked.
