Funding stream needed for permanent bollards

There has been a call to replace the bollards outside McDonald’s Restaurant on Park Road – which prevent illegal parking on the road leading to a busy residential area – to be replaced with permanent bollards which would greatly improve the aesthetic of the area.

Cllr John O’Donoghue said the temporary bollards – installed to prevent the roadway being blocked by restaurant customers – were a big success but they have become unsightly.

“These temporary bollards were for the benefit of residents who were having difficulty accessing their estates. They have greatly alleviated the previous access problems,” he said.

But, Cllr O’Donoghue added, something more permanent now needs to be put in place which would look better.

“When the bollards were implemented, I was told that they were a temporary fixture to see if they would work. It is now a couple of years later and given their resounding success, I ask that the council honour the commitment they gave initially,” Cllr O’Donoghue remarked,

He said there is a wonderful group of residents working to improve the estates in the area and this would greatly add to their work by making the entrance more aesthetically pleasing.

Killarney Municipal District Engineer, John Ahern, said there is a great deal going on in that particular area and detailed designs have been prepared for cycleways in the vicinity.

He added that the longer term plan is for a new strategic road that would be coming from the bypass road to the junction near McDonad’s.

In the meantime, the council said it is preparing documentation for the statutory process to bring bollards matter before members for their consideration by the end of 2024 but, it was stressed, a funding stream will need to be identified prior to installation.
