Catherine Young has been appointed Kerry County Council and Arts Council dancer-in-residence for 2024.

As a dancer and choreographer, she has worked extensively in Ireland, Europe, the USA and Africa. Her choreography is heavily influenced by her explorations of African dance and it has a strong sense of physicality.

During her previous residencies with Kerry County Council, Catherine established The Welcoming project to embrace new communities in Ireland, bringing people together and fostering cultural integration and social inclusion through dance.

In 2024, Catherine will continue that work through weekly workshops for the Céilí, Afro, Dabke, Ukraine initiative which features African dance, traditional Dabke dance from Palestine/Syria and the old style Irish céilí dances as well as Ukrainian folk dances.

A programme of workshops will also be delivered to primary schools throughout the county.

Kerry Arts Officer, Kate Kennelly, said, over years, Catherine has expanded Kerry’s strong reputation for dance to include contemporary works.

“We are delighted that Catherine will continue her professional and community- based projects in the county. The benefit of her work goes beyond the national and international

acclaim received and positively impacts the day-to-day lives of local participants and communities,” she said.
