A Kerry local elections candidate has complained that extreme, polarised and populist positions have become more prevalent in political and public life and the increasing targeted aggression towards elected representatives is extremely concerning.
Anluan Dunne, a Green Party candidate in Tralee, was commenting following the disturbing incident involving masked men who targeted the home of Minister Roderic O’Gorman.
“We have seen a continual increase in harassment and intimidation of politicians and representatives. This must be addressed and stopped,” he said.
“As someone who is running for election in Kerry, I find this deteriorating situation troubling both for myself and my family. No one doing their job should be treated in this manner”.

Mr Dunne said he is also deeply concerned at reports of a lack of action from Gardaí in tackling what is clearly anti-social behaviour and a potential breach of the peace.
“We need thuggery of this sort addressed swiftly and comprehensively,” he insisted.
The Kerry Green Party representative said leadership from every elected representative is needed to call out behaviour which emboldens those willing to enact aggression such as that seen at the home of the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.
“We pride ourselves as being the land of a thousand welcomes. It is time we all focused on bringing the incredible empathy, hospitality and friendliness which the people of Ireland are known for back to the core of our politics and public discourse,” he stated.
