€160,000 price tag to keep an eye on Killarney

62 new CCTV cameras will keep watch over Killarney

It will cost the authorities an initial outlay of just under €160,000 to keep watch on what is happening in selected parts of Killarney.

That’s the estimated cost of the purchase and installation of the new CCTV system planned for the town which is finally about to become a reality after years of deliberations and negotiations.

A total of 62 cameras are to be installed as part of the scheme at a total estimated cost of €179, 590.

30 cameras will be fitted in 11 different locations in the town centre, 20 in the outer town areas and a further 12 in the Ballyspillane estate where a number of social problems have been reported to Kerry County Council and Gardai.

Broken down further the estimated costs cover:

  • Killarney town centre (20 cameras): €52,090
  • Killarney outer (30 cameras): €67,000
  • Ballyspillane (12 cameras): €40,500.

Killarney Municipal District Council has confirmed that over €31,000 has been approved in grant funding for the town cameras, over €24,000 for the outer areas cameras and over €40,000 for Ballyspillane.

That leaves a deficit of close on €65,000 to be met.

Significant progress has been made in the matter in recent weeks, including addressing concerns about GDPR.
