New road surface will help to avoid saddle sores

A notorious roadway on a busy route in Killarney, which had been in an appalling state for quite some time, is currently being restored to pristine condition.

The road from the Abbey Cross in Muckross, outbound towards Torc Waterfall, has long been described as an eyesore and a danger to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians such was the shocking state of the surface.

Giant potholes caused a real hindrance on the road – on the main Ring of Kerry route between Killarney and Moll’s Gap – and councillors had repeatedly called on Kerry County Council and road safety authority officials to tackle the matter.

Now, however, the road is being given a major overhaul (pictured above) and Cllr John O’Donoghue, a long-time campaigner on the issue, has thanked the council engineers and design team, Transport Infrastructure Ireland officials and the road crew who are completing the work.

Cllr John O’Donoghue: Constantly campaigned on the issue

“For too long the road this major tourist route into the town of Killarney was in a terrible state of repair.

“The new resurfacing work has resulted in a road surface much more befitting the volume of traffic it carries into the town,” he said.

“I know it was a particular source of angst for bus tour operators and they will be in for a treat when they return during the tourist season.

“I’m equally sure all the hardy souls returning returning after completing the annual Ring of Kerry cycle will be delighted with the lovely, new smooth road surface which awaits them on their return towards the town,” Cllr O’Donoghue added.

“The part of their anatomy in contact with the bicycle saddle will be particularly relieved,” he quipped.

The road also leads to Muckross House and Gardens and it is one of the busiest routed in the county all year round.

Cllr O’Donoghue has now asked for signs to be erected on both sides of the entrance to Muckross Abbey – on the same stretch of road – warning motorists to slow down and exercise caution as horse and carts are entering and exiting.

The council said the matter would be examined by Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s “signs and lines team” to establish if additional signage can be provided at that location.
