A sports administrator who worked tirelessly to make the Killarney Valley AC arena in the grounds of St Brendan’s College become a reality has been named the Kerry recipient of the Irish Sport Volunteers Award supported by the 29-strong national network of Sports Partnerships.
Jean Courtney, who has volunteered at the club for 20 years. was the driving force behind the rebrand of the club into what it is today, after recognising the appetite for an athletics club in the area.
Killarney Valley AC has thrived under her leadership and Jean is the heart and soul of it all, attending training every week to get the best out of the athletes.
For the last 20 years, she has been the person who enters every athlete into each competition locally and nationally. She rarely misses a competition and has been driving athletes all over Ireland for the last two decades.
The adjudicators said the success of the club is in no small way down to Jean’s commitment and there would be no athletics club in Killarney without her hard work and determination.
The Volunteers in Sport Awards celebrate the contributions of the band of volunteers across the country who give their time to Irish sport and physical activity every year.
Minister of State with responsibility for Sport and Physical Education, Thomas Byrne,will be the special guest speaker at the awards which will take place on March 22 at The Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown and the ceremony will be hosted by sports broadcaster Gráinne McElwain.
