First it was The Sunday Game and now it’s Prime Time. When it comes to the most gifted footballer of his generation, it was always only a matter of time.

GAA superstar David Clifford has not only made his mark on Croke Park and in every other football stadium he has graced, his massive influence and great reputation has now spread to the corridors of power.

And although he knew nothing about it, in true David Clifford style, he has gone right to the top with Tánaiste, Leo Varadkar, referencing the stylish Fossa and Kerry attacker when commenting on the big story of the week – which has nothing to do with sport.

Interviewed on RTÉ’s Prime Time about the worrying reports of significant job losses in the tech sector, the Fine Gael leader and Enterprise Minister said he is worried about the situation and is attending meetings in an attempt to keep on top of the situation.

But, despite the lay-offs blow, Minister Varadkar said Ireland should still take heart that it has the ability and the infrastructure to attract big tech companies like Twitter, Meta and Intel.

“We should always see the fact that we have big companies that hire a lot of people, make a lot of profit and pay a lot of tax, we should see that as an asset,” he said.

“It’s like having David Clifford on your team. You know you have an asset, you look after it, you treat it well,” the Tánaiste said, adding that you can never take it for granted.
