Killarney will celebrate Traveller Pride Week

A number of big events have been planned for Killarney to mark Traveller Pride Week will get underway at the weekend.

The highlight will be a special Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral on Tuesday, July 19 at 5.00pm and everybody is welcome to attend.

Members of the local Traveller community said the service will be an important event as it will bring unity.

A week of creative activities has also been lined up throughout Kerry with the Kerry Traveller Health and Community Development Project spearheading the plans.

A family fun day will be held in Balllyspillane on this Saturday from 12noon to 2.00pm with similar events scheduled for Castleisland, Tralee and Listowel.

There will be a play and a special music event in the ANAM Arts and Cultural Centre in Killarney next Wednesday from 5.00pm to 8.00pm with a Traveller Pride flag to be raised at a venue yet to be confirmed.

The organisers or Pride Week say the Traveller culture experience is rapidly changing and, today, everyone’s experience of growing up as a Traveller is different.

Crafts and traditions in the culture that were once widely practiced and experienced are rare today and this year’s celebration is about coming together and acknowledging and embracing that heritage with pride, exploring a natural creativity to connect with one another and sharing cultural experiences through the joy that creativity brings.
