THIS year’s County Clean-Up Day – which will take place on Saturday – is set to smash all previous records in terms of public participation.
Over 6,000 people have already registered to lend a hand and that’s not factoring in those that will just turn up on the day, don their hi-vis vest and get stuck in.
Last year 5,500 volunteers collected 8,000 bags of rubbish around the county and when the community initiative started eight years ago, just 500 people took to the streets and roads to collect 5,000 bags of waste.

The Killarney volunteers have been asked to gather at the upper car park of Daly’s SuperValu at 8.00am on Saturday.
They can park their vehicles in the former Pretty Polly site and they will be transferred by complimentary bus to and from the litter collection points at Molls Gap, the main Tralee Road and the main Killorglin road.
Motorists have been asked to proceed with caution on the day as teams of litter pickers will be out and about.
The KWD Recycling sponsored event, promoted by Kerry County Council, Kerry County Council will see a number of local organisations, including Kerry GAA, Kerry IFA and Kerry ICMSA, joining in the effort again this year.
They have called on their members to join the clean-up and anti-litter initiative on the day.
Although registration is closed, some bags and vests can still be collected at the KWD plant and Killarney Town Hall or they will be available on the day.
