45 with stars in their eyes

EIGHT players from Killarney Legion and six from town rivals Dr Crokes have been put forward for consideration for the 2015 East Kerry GAA All-Stars selection.

Legion enjoyed one of their best year’s ever, reaching the county senior football final and the district board decider and although they lost out in both, they still made remarkable progress under trainer Peter Keane who has since taken over the Kerry minors.

The club’s steady progress has been acknowledged by the judging panel in the Aquila Club East Kerry Board All-Stars which will be presented on January 29.

Goalkeeper Brian Kelly, defenders Chris Davis, Podge O’Connor and Daragh O’Doherty, midfielders Jamie O’Sullivan and Shaun Keane as well as Danny Sheahan and the free-scoring Conor Keane are the Legion players on the long list of 45 nominees which will be cut to 24 and, ultimately, reduced to 15.

For Crokes, veteran Eoin Brosnan, Cillian Fitzgerald and John Payne have been nominated for defensive positions with inclusion also for attackers Brian Looney, Daithi Casey and Tony Brosnan.

Spa are represented on the long list by the ever-reliable Mike Stam O’Donoghue and Dan O’Donoghue while Glenflesk’s flagbearers are Dara Roche, Shane Courtney, Kieran Murphy and Jeff O’Donoghue who made his senior Kerry debut against Clare last weekend.

Beaten East Kerry semi-finalists Kilcummin, meanwhile, have Brendan Kealy, Philip Casey, Kevin Gorman, Matthew Keane, Kevin McCarthy, Shane McSweeney and Daniel O’Leary included.

East Kerry champions Rathmore, not surprisingly, have no less than 11 players on the long list with Shane Ryan, veterans Tom O’Sullivan and Aidan O’Mahony, George O’Keeffe, Brendan O’Keeffe, John Moynihan, Cathal Murphy, Padraig McCarthy, TJ Friel, Eoin Lawlor and O’Donoghue Cup final man-of-the-match Paul Murphy all making the initial cut.

Also nominated this year are Darren Brosnan, Don Murphy and Patrick O’Riordan of Gneeveguilla, Daniel O’Shea and veteran Seamus Scanlon of Currow, Kerry panelist Philip O’Connor of Cordal and Stephen Foley of Firies.
