AN annual golf tournament in memory of a great stalwart of the Deerpark Pitch and Putt Club in Killarney turned into a real family affair when a mother and daughter featured on the winning team.
The 28th Ricky Kelly Memorial remembered the former club PRO who passed away, at a very young age, in 1991. Ricky, from Dalton’s Avenue, was a staunch member of the Deerpark club and, as well as being a very accomplished player, he was very actively involved in off-course activities and club administration.
This year’s tournament doubled up as a fundraiser for John ‘Sully’ O’Sullivan, from Woodlawn, who fell seriously ill last October when he developed sepsis.
The popular mechanic was initially treated at University Hospital Kerry before being transferred for specialist care to the Mater Hospital in Dublin where he remained for several months. He was recently transferred back to the hospital in Tralee, to be closer to his family, and although he is improving, he still has a long road ahead.
A fund was set up by his friends to help meet some of the huge medical bills incurred and to make his home more accessible for when he returns.
Over 30 teams supported this year’s Ricky Kelly Memorial and the winners were the last team to finish last Friday night, in pitch darkness. The team that triumphed comprised Ger O’Connor who joined forces with former club secretary, Margaret B Looney, and her daughter, Danielle Breen, for victory by five shots.
Proceeds from the event will be presented to the O’Sullivan family at a function in the Tatler Jack Bar – sponsors of the event – in October.
Other teams to play well in the tournament were Damien Fleming, David O’Donnell and Sharon Fleming; Lorcan Martin, Darragh O’Callaghan and Alan Walsh; Noel Moynihan, Aidan O’Donoghue and Sarah Casey; Jason O’Sullivan, Lee O’Callaghan and Shane Hurley; Colm O’Dowd, Donie O’Dowd and Sharon Murphy and Brian McCarthy, Mark O’Carroll and Ben Kelliher.
