Killarney headquartered Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd was a big supporter of this year’s
Engineers Ireland’s STEPS Engineers Week, an initiative aimed at sparking interest in engineering among young minds.
Now in its ninth year of participation, Liebherr welcomed 275 students from 11 schools across Kerry and Cork to its facility for an immersive engineering experience.
The event provided students with a dynamic introduction to engineering careers and the crucial role engineers play in designing and manufacturing Liebherr’s industry-leading container cranes.
Through an engaging presentation, students gained insights into engineering pathways and the technological advancements shaping the industry. A guided tour of Liebherr’s world-class manufacturing facility followed, offering students an exclusive look at cutting-edge engineering in action.

They observed the design and fabrication process behind Liebherr cranes, from initial concepts to final assembly.
Demonstrations featured state-of-the-art machinery, including automatic welders, high-precision plasma cutting machines, robotic shot blasters, robotic drilling and boring systems, and an advanced paint facility. These hands-on insights showcased the precision, innovation and expertise that define Liebherr’s engineering excellence.

The experience extended into the company’s research and development centre, where students explored the future of crane technology. They witnessed advancements in automation, remote control and alternative power sources for rubber tyre gantry cranes. Interactive demonstrations, such as a Creo design showcase, a HoloLens 3D crane simulation and a mini crane network, provided a tangible look at the latest innovations in engineering.
Students also had the rare opportunity to see cranes operate in different modes –autonomous, remote-controlled and manual – offering a comprehensive understanding
of modern crane functionality.
Liebherr’s participation in Engineers Week underscores its ongoing commitment to fostering the next generation of engineers. By providing real-world insights into the industry, the company hopes to inspire students to explore careers in engineering and innovation
With another successful Engineers Week complete, Liebherr looks forward to continuing its engagement in STEM education and inspiring future engineers for years to come.
