At the end of the first quarter in the Kerry SFC final, it was a definite that this game was going to go to the wire. Crokes got on top in the early stages and led 0-7 to 0-3 coming to the end of the first 15-minute period but we were rocked by a South Kerry goal at the commencement of the second quarter to leave us just a point ahead.
We shaded the last 10 minutes, scoring four points to South Kerry three and this left Crokes 0-11 to 1-6 in front when the referee blew the half time whistle. South Kerry’s goalkeeper denied us goals with some great saves in this first half but our goalkeeper Shane Murphy made some great saves also during the game and his kick outs were also excellent.
The teams exchanged points on two occasions in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Two points from South Kerry without reply brought them equality with 10 minutes to go but the defining moments of the game came in the next seven minutes when we sent over three unanswered points. We were also down to 14 men at this period but our defence managed to hold out.
Our opponents sent over two points to leave just the minimum between the sides. A point by Kieran O’Leary in the 62nd minute eased our anxiety but we were relieved to hear the referee’s final whistle a minute later with the fimal scoreline 0-17 to 1-12.
We had to line out without our talisman Colm Cooper but all our lads responded to the task we had in hand and this carried us over the line in the end. Colm came on in the last quarter and had a big part in our recycling of the ball in the closing stages and our eventual win.
This was a 21-man victory as all played their part with six subs introduced. One would have to mention Kieran O’Lear, Micheál Burns and Daithi Casey who, between them contributed eleven points from play. One would also have to single out Gavin White who deservedly won the man of match award.
